With the invention of internet, it cannot be separated with social media. Social media has been used by people ranging from young even up to the old one. Social media can affect people to keep up to date in socializing on social networking. It boosts desire of people not to be left behind by people around them especially on social media. It is directly proportional with a phenomenon called fear of missing out. Beside increasing the effect of FOMO, social media generates negative and positive impacts for people who are suffering FOMO and use social media either.
Firstly, FOMO can cause a negative effects for people who have low self-regulation. Self-regulation means that an individual that is able to control their mind to hold their behavior. If people don't have a self-regulation, it can make them waste their time on social media and they are not capable of living their life productively. They always think to update on social media to make them seen happy by people around them and do not focus on their job or study. They will ignore their obligation because of being distracted of feeling that can not be separated with surrounding environment around them.
Secondly, Even though FOMO can cause a negative impact, there are not a lot of people who know that FOMO has a positive impact as well. Based on studied by Hodkison (2016), FOMO could be utilized to make a good marketing. He said that FOMO as commercial and non-commercial, was designed specifically to encourage consumer to utilize a chance to do "act persuading". After that, He wrote that we could find journal or article that supports FOMO's positive impact such as Winning with FOMO' (Marketingmag, 2016),'Cruiselings: A new Breed of FOMO' (Travel Weekly, 2014) and 'MTV and Flight Centre Create Travel "FOMO""(Mediaweek, AQ7 2016).
Finally, There are a lot of impacts that are caused by FOMO. It can be positive or negative impacts. We can utilize the positive impact as a marketing to persuade our consumer or we can be drown with the feeling of being left behind. It depends on our self-regulation because we need to be able to control our behavior to be more productive in this technology era.
